Acupuncture & Our Vision Regeneration Protocol Program

Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-thin, sterile needles into the body to activate special receptors which communicate with the central nervous, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems. This needle results in the release of your body's natural painkilling substances and the dilation of blood vessels delivering oxygen and nutrient-rich blood, hormones and immune factors to sick areas of the body.

Our Vision Regeneration Protocol Program follows the standards for this treatment protocol. Treatments are over a two-week period (if changes occur in the first week), at two treatments per day and 10 or 20 treatments within this two-week period. Many people will need additional treatment after their initial 20 treatments. Each person is unique and each person will be given a unique long term vision health plan.

We have spaces available for this protocol beginning November 2017 and again in January 2018. Please contact us for your free consultation to see if your eye condition qualifies you for this treatment program.

In TCM, we see your eye problem isn't really an "eye" problem. In most cases, your eyes are not causing the problem but their other problems in your body causing issues with your eyes. Our goal is to identify what is the underlying cause of your eye dysfunction. How we do this is with a full health history intake, a unique style of acupuncture, nutrition education, herbal supplementation, acupressure and eye exercises.

Not only do we treat your eyes but we treat your eyes from a Chinese medical perspective and treat your entire body to find out WHY your vision is failing. We use a special and unique style of acupuncture that is specifically for the eyes. Very few acupuncturists are trained in this style of acupuncture. We use acupuncture, diet, supplements, herbs, and at-home use products to help your vision improve and stabilize once you have left the clinic.

Our Acupuncturists are NOT Eye doctors and do not test your vision. We suggest a pre and post eye exam to assess objective changes.

Acupuncture improves blood flow, lowers inflammation, increases nutrients and hormones, and helps create new tissue. This in turn can help with the healing of the body and the eyes.

FAQs About Eye Problem Care

Are needles put in the eyes?

No, never. Needles are NEVER PLACED IN THE EYE and we use 4-15 tiny needles per treatment.

What are some of the benefits that one may get from my vision regeneration program?

Possible increased visual acuity and eye health. Possible improvement in your overall health, sleep, stress, cold extremities, blood circulation, pain reduction and overall sense of better health. In addition to better possible vision, most patients report less stress and anxiety.

How can acupuncture improve my vision?

Research shows that acupuncture increases blood flow to the eyes and the surrounding area, as well as stimulates different neurological parts of the brain. Ocular Doppler-test that measures the blood flow and research that has shown that acupuncture increases blood flow to the eyes. Functional MRI tests show that acupuncture may activate and suppress certain areas of the brain involved in visual perception. We can measure some of the effects of acupuncture, but at this time we do not yet have a full understanding of how the whole mechanism works, and more research is needed and is being done.

What your are the goals for my eyes?

Cataracts: We seek to control inflammation and oxidative stress and the slow the progression of Cataracts

Glaucoma: We seek to recover some lost vision. We also seek to preserve and maintain health and function of the optic nerve.

Macular Degeneration/ Age related MD, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Stargards disease, Diabetic Retinopathy, Myopia, Hyperopia and other retinal diseases: We seek to activate blood circulation to solve stagnation of the drusens. Improve circulation in the choroids and retina to prevent cell death. We try to reverse the inability to absorb and circulate vital nutrients for vision. We will use acupuncture to try to enhance cellular ATP synthesis in the retina.

Do you use herbs or supplements for the health of my body and my eyes?

Nutrition, supplements and herbs are a very important piece for your health and the health of your vision. We will set up an individual nutrition plan for the health of your body and your eyes.

What does the process look like?

We start first with a full health history followed by a health history of your eyes. If you and I both agree treatment for your condition is warranted, then we can lay out a treatment plan to best serve you with a better vision health.

We typically start with 10 treatments to assess if our Vision Regeneration Program is working for you. Through the week of treatment we will continually be checking to see how your vision is improving/changing. Each treatment will consist of between four and 10 small needles placed in your extremities. Treatments are about 20-30 minutes in length, with at least one hour between treatments. We can structure your treatments for you as needed. Each session of 2 treatments with this break takes about of 2.5 to 3 hours.

Around 80-85% of acupuncture eye patients doing this protocol worldwide found improvements within the first round of 10 acupuncture treatments. If it is needed and/or warranted and if changes occur, we will suggest an additional week of treatment.

We cannot cure or stop the degenerative process but what we can do is slow the degenerative process and/or wake up these asleep or "sleeping cells". Many times, patients assume that all eye cells are dead and thus your vision is not fixable. With treatment, we are able to heal and treat many of these these so-called "dead cells". We can do because the cells are merely dormant and non functioning but they are not "dead" yet. As we stimulate hormones, blood flow and nutrients to your eyes your vision can improve. The result for many is that the cells begin to "wake up" and function better.

How do you measure the efficiency of acupuncture treatments?

It is important to note that TCM eye practitioners are NOT optometrists, and no one at Advanced Wellness Centre is either. We do not test your vision per say, what we are testing is your visual changes. For example, Can you see more? More clearly? Are your eyes less sensitive to light? Is your subjective field of vision better? Can you read better? How is vision in your daily life? Are your eyes less tired? Less dry? Can you see more clearly, further, less blurry, etc. We suggest all patients see their eye doctor prior to treatment at our clinic and post treatment at our clinics to assess objectively the changes.

In cases of macular degeneration, where the main sight is about to disappear and patients experience a slight distortion or complete loss of visual function, we strongly recommend you visit an ophthalmologist or optometrist to carry out a OCT scan and a fundus camera exam. In summary, we use conventional subjective testing in the clinic with the addition of an ophthalmological test through partners to confirm the trend of improvement or stabilization.

For how long will the results of the treatment last?

The result of the treatments can last from several months to a few years. Each treatment situation is different and factors that exacerbate health problems, such as the use of medications, poor diet, stress, various lifestyle factors and how structured you are in relation to complying with the recommendations you get, will play a central role in how fast you have to go back for a follow up treatment.

A high percentage of patients will probably require a certain degree of supervision to maintain healthy blood flow to the macula. AMD is a neuro-degenerative condition that is basically incurable. The best we can do here is to try to restore the lost vision and treat the condition most zealously and with great attention. In most AMD cases we focus on stabilizing sight as much as possible to avoid deterioration, and the stabilized vision should hold at a steady level for a prolonged period. It will require some supplements and diet change and some lifestyle changes.

I do not live in the Ottawa area and cannot come there for two weeks:

If you are travelling from out of town and or do not have 2 weeks to commit to treatment we can structure a program specifically for you such as 3-5 treatments per day for 5-6 days in a row. This condensed program is intensive, but improvements have been made by patients all over the world with this condensed protocol as well.
